The origin of Kutná Hora is closely linked with the development of monetary
system in the 13th century, with the mining of silver; however, silver coins
known as denars had been minted at the nearby Malín fortified site, a residence
of the Slavnik family, as early as in the l0th century. The royal mining law
lus Regale Montanorum, issued under the reign of King Wenceslas II, was a decisive
factor for the growth of the town.
Thanks to numerous royal privileges Kutná Hora became the second most important
town of the Kingdom of Bohemia after Prague.
Even today, Kutná Hora is among the great European historical centers, exhibiting its many architectural monuments
